How Pregnancy Affects Your Feet

During pregnancy, the body is constantly changing. The center of gravity shifts, the load increases, and the body adapts step by step. The feet are often affected more than you might expect.

Increased load and hormonal changes can cause the structure of the foot to change temporarily or permanently. Many experience a lowering of the arches, wider feet, or changes in stability throughout the day.

When the foot’s natural structure is loaded differently, the rest of the body’s movement pattern is affected as well. During a period when the body is changing rapidly, the foundation becomes even more important.

At Stinaa.J, every shoe is built with Insole Technology at its foundation. Designed to activate the foot’s three arches and promote alignment throughout the body. For greater stability, improved load distribution, and a more structured step throughout the day.

Some common changes in the feet during pregnancy:

  • The arches may lower. The hormone relaxin makes the body’s ligaments softer and more elastic in preparation for childbirth. This also affects the ligaments in the feet. As the ligaments become more flexible, the foot’s three arches may lower, particularly the longitudinal arch.
  • The feet may become longer and wider. As the arches lower, the shape of the foot changes. Many pregnant women therefore find that their shoe size changes permanently after pregnancy.
  • Increased pronation. As the arches lose structure, the foot tends to roll further inward under load. This changes the body’s movement pattern and affects the knees, hips, and back.
  • Increased load on the forefoot and heel. Increased body weight and a shifted center of gravity lead to greater load through the foot, particularly during longer periods of standing and walking.
  • Swelling. Increased blood volume and fluid retention cause many pregnant women to experience swollen feet and ankles, particularly later in the day and during the third trimester.
  • Increased risk of plantar fasciitis and overload. As the structure of the foot changes and the load increases, tissues and muscles may work less efficiently. This can contribute to overload injuries and pain in areas such as the heel, arch, and forefoot.
  • Changes in balance and stability. The center of gravity shifts forward during pregnancy, affecting posture and stability throughout the body. The feet therefore need to work harder to create control and stability during movement.

This is why many pregnant women find that shoes that previously worked for them no longer feel stable or spacious enough. Structure, load distribution, and support for the foot’s natural shape often become more important during pregnancy.
