Lumbago – pain in the lower back

Approximately 80% of all people will experience back pain at some point in their lives.

What is lumbago?

Lumbago, also known as a “lower back strain” or simply “lower back pain,” is very common. About 20% of all doctor visits are related to these issues. Lower back pain is the most common type of back pain.

Symptoms

Pain from lumbago can arise in many different ways, for example during heavy lifting, twisting, or staying in a forward-bent position for a long time. The pain occurs in the lower part of the back. Initially, you will most likely feel stiffness, and it is common for one side of the lower back to have more muscle tension than the other.

Lower back pain can be divided into three different categories:

Lumbar insufficiency

  • This feels like a strong sense of fatigue in the lower back. This type of pain does not occur suddenly but builds up gradually. It usually arises after standing, sitting, or walking for long periods.
  • It is often associated with tense and stiff muscles in the lower back area.

Sciatica

  • With sciatica, the pain radiates down into one or both legs.
  • Possible nerve involvement can cause numbness or weakness in the leg.
  • Avoid heavy lifting and forward-bending positions.

Acute lumbago (back spasm)

  • With acute lumbago, a sudden and sharp pain occurs, triggered by movement. It comes on abruptly, often during lifting or twisting.
  • The nature of the pain varies. It can feel sharp, stabbing, or dull.
  • The lower back may spasm and feel as though it locks up.

Treatment of lumbago

Proper exercise

Exercise that strengthens and stabilizes the core, back, and abdominal muscles is very important. This applies both for treatment and prevention. (See our suggested exercises HERE.)

Work environment

Review your work environment. You may need to adjust it to provide better support. If you walk or stand a lot on hard surfaces, orthopedic insoles can help reduce fatigue or back pain.

Back support brace

Try using a back support in the form of a stabilizing band or belt.

Orthopedic insoles in shoes

Choose orthopedic insoles that improve posture and reduce strain on the lower back. Our 5-Bar insoles are among the best on the market—try them today!
